Naj Austin is an entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Somewhere Good and Ethel's Club, a social and wellness platform centering people of color through community, arts, and culture. She has spent the last five years in the real estate and hospitality tech industry building digital and physical products aimed at making the world a more inclusive and equitable space. She was recently named one of Inc's 100 Female Founders transforming America, a Huffpost Culture Shifter of 2020 and Time Out New York's 2020 list of women making NYC better.
naj's daily routine:
"Wake up around 8:15 am, actively avoid my phone, shower, look over the to-do list for the day, walk to get coffee about 4 blocks away, then work which consists of meetings with my team, investors and advisors and handling all partnership conversations. Break for 10 minute meditation with the Shine app, eat lunch, attend the 3 pm Ethel’s Club workshop event, dig into deep strategy (no meetings/calls), circle up with the team. Work until about 7 pm, dinner, then usually a brain break in the form of a tv show - currently watching I May Destroy You!”
on getting started in her career:
"I started my career working in startups - I’ve always loved getting involved in the very early stages - there’s so much power in having an idea and bringing it to life. I worked at a few real estate startups prior to starting Ethel’s Club - those roles empowered me in feeling like I could do it because I had seen it accomplished.”
naj’s self-care routine:
“I meditate throughout the day and take very strategic time away from the computer/phone to be alone with my thoughts. It’s taken me awhile to have that kind of ownership over my calendar, but I saw how much better off and healthy I was when I enforced those boundaries.”
